Job Description

We have an exciting opportunity for a Health and Safety Hub Coordinator looking for their first real experience of Health and Safety in an operational environment. You will join us on a full time, fixed term (2 years) basis, based in London and in return, you will receive a competitive salary of £29,000 – £32,700 per annum, subject to skills and experience.
The Francis Crick Institute is a biomedical discovery institute dedicated to understanding the fundamental biology underlying health and disease. Its work is helping to understand why disease develops and to translate discoveries into new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat illnesses such as cancer, heart disease, stroke, infections, and neurodegenerative diseases.
The Health and Safety Hub Coordinator role:
The Health and Safety Hub Coordinator will help to implement systems and process, as well as influence culture and behaviours to drive the H&S transformation programme.
The scale and complexity of the science requires a highly professional and effective Health and Safety team, this role offers applicants a development opportunity to work with and be supervised and supported by team of specialist H&S professionals.
Key responsibilities of our Health and Safety Hub Coordinator:
These include but are not limited to:
* Acting as a point of contact for health and safety matters for groups and other parties on your floor
* Acting as a point of contact, providing specialist advice, support and coordination of H&S between groups and other parties on a wide range of health, safety and compliance topics
* Providing effective support to the Hub Health and Safety Advisors on all aspects of Health and Safety Work
* Taking responsibility for specific projects and initiatives under the direction of the Hub Health and Safety Advisor
* Ensuring regular contact with Groups, STPs, F&I and Science Ops both on an ad hoc and formal basis in order to deal proactively and reactively with safety issues
* Being involved in organising and attending planned health and safety inspections and provide written reports
* Being involved in ensuring that risk assessments of all activities, processes, experimental work, equipment, etc have been carried out and are current
* Being involved in investigations of accidents, incidents and near misses ensuring root causes are identified, that lessons are learnt and that appropriate measures are implemented in a timely manner
* Ensuring that fire precaution (means of escape etc) and fire prevention measures (fire extinguishers etc.) are regularly inspected
* Assisting in developing and delivering of Health and Safety training programmes and maintenance of records
What we’re looking for in our Health and Safety Hub Coordinator:
The post holder should embody and demonstrate our core Crick values: bold, imaginative, open, dynamic and collegial, in addition to the following:
* Minimum Level 3 Health and Safety qualification such as NEBOSH certificate or equivalent qualification with experience
* Experience of an engineering or science field or a relevant degree or equivalent and willingness to learn the application of H&S within a research-based environment.
* Knowledge of current health and safety legislation as it applies to a science-based environment
* Excellent communication, interpersonal and negotiation skills, with an ability to influence, engage and build relationships with staff at all levels. To change style and focus when needed, including being supportive and firm but tactful.
* Strong attention to detail with a proven track record of managing multiple projects simultaneously
* Work effectively as a member of a team but also on own initiative
* Ability to work effectively in a complex and fast paced environment with strong problem-solving skills, with a pragmatic approach to solutions
* Experience of using databases and/or spreadsheets, data analysis and ability to use data to produce meaningful reports.
* The ability to act with discretion and to maintain confidentiality
* Able to work outside normal office hours where required
* Excellent communication skills, with strong presentation and teaching skills and an ability to promote a Crick Health, Safety & Wellbeing culture.
